Tron founder Justin Sun to buy $100m more in Trump memecoin

Justin Sun, founder of Tron, plans to acquire an additional US$100 million in $TRUMP tokens, doubling his known stake.

He announced on X that $TRUMP would soon be tradable on the TRON network.

The token, which launched in January, once peaked at a US$15 billion market cap but has dropped to US$2 billion as of July.

The $TRUMP token is reportedly 80% controlled by the Trump Organization and affiliates. It generates transaction fees routed to creator-linked wallets.

Chainalysis reported these wallets earned over US$324 million from January to April, but it has stopped tracking the data.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Political currencies as a recurring historical phenomenon

The Trump-related crypto tokens represent a digital evolution of a long-standing tradition of politically-themed currencies in American history.

During the 1830s economic crisis, privately minted “Hard Times Tokens” emerged after President Andrew Jackson vetoed the Second Bank of the United States, featuring satirical political messages that criticized government policies amid bank failures and inflation1.

Like today’s $TRUMP token, these historical coins served dual purposes: addressing a practical need (currency shortage then, speculative investment now) while simultaneously functioning as political expression and commentary.

The phenomenon demonstrates how financial instruments can become vehicles for political messaging during periods of economic uncertainty or political polarization, with modern technology amplifying the scale and speed of the pattern.

2️⃣ The evolving crypto-political funding ecosystem

Justin Sun’s $100 million investment highlights the growing intersection between cryptocurrency wealth and political influence in a way that bypasses traditional campaign finance channels.

The crypto industry has dramatically increased its political spending, with companies pouring over $134 million into the 2024 election cycle alone, seeking to influence regulatory outcomes that would benefit their business interests2.

Trump’s evolution from crypto skeptic to enthusiast parallels the industry’s strategic shift toward cultivating political alliances. This new crypto-political nexus creates novel financial incentives that align political success with token performance, as evidenced by the Trump Organization receiving transaction fees from every $TRUMP token trade – generating over $324 million between January and April according to the original article.
