Trip.com offers stablecoin payments for overseas bookings

Trip.com has started allowing some overseas users to pay for prepaid hotel and flight bookings with stablecoins USDT and USDC.

The Singapore-based travel platform enabled the option on October 9, 2025 for select regions through its international site, according to a customer service agent.

This move comes as stablecoin payments grow more common outside mainland China, despite Beijing’s ongoing restrictions on cryptocurrency activity.

Users in mainland China and some other markets do not have access to the stablecoin payment feature, which is determined by IP address.

The payment option was not available in Hong Kong as of this week.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Trip.com adds stablecoin pay with Triple-A, limits access in some markets

  • Trip.com works with Singapore-licensed Triple-A to take USDT (Tether) and USDC (USD Coin). It supports Ethereum, Tron, and Polygon. Solana, Arbitrum One (an Ethereum Layer 2 network), and TON (The Open Network) are available 1.
  • Access uses IP checks tied to the user’s internet address. Mainland China is excluded, and Hong Kong is off-limits as of this week. Other markets are restricted to meet local rules.
  • Demand is strong in places with currency instability or poor access to international cards, since people value stablecoins for predictable value and global reach 1.
  • Stablecoin payments are irreversible. Merchants face lower chargeback (card dispute) risk. Customers have limited recourse if a booking fails 2.

Payment service providers can win travel merchants with compliant stablecoin checkout, multi-jurisdiction licensing, plus AML screening

  • More travel apps will seek stablecoin rails (payment infrastructure). That drives demand for Payment Service Providers (PSPs) for wallet links, fiat (government-issued currency) settlement, and compliance 2.
  • They need licenses in several regions. Examples include the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the European Union Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (EU MiCA). They should run real-time sanctions screening. They also require strong Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) controls. IP geofencing should block restricted markets 2.
  • Cross-border sellers in emerging markets can benefit. Many shoppers do not have international credit cards, yet they hold stablecoins. Providers can offer checkout widgets, QR codes, and instant settlement in preferred fiat currencies 2.
