Travel platform Wego expands into stablecoin payments

Wego, a Dubai- and Singapore-based travel booking platform, said on May 19 it partnered with Singapore-based stablecoin payments firm Triple-A to let customers pay for flights and other travel bookings with supported stablecoins.

Wego will continue receiving settlement in local currencies.

The companies said the payment option is aimed at cross-border bookings and could help in markets where credit card access is limited or international card payments have higher decline rates.

Triple-A will handle the payment flow, compliance, and currency conversion.

The company said it works with more than 1,000 enterprise customers worldwide.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Stablecoins can ease cross-border payment problems

  • Cards from emerging markets, including parts of Africa and Latin America, can be declined for international online purchases because merchants see more chargeback risk. Stablecoins can give some shoppers another way to pay 1.
  • In places with high inflation or capital controls, some users keep savings in stablecoins such as Tether (USDT) or USD Coin (USDC). That can make stablecoins a natural fit for international purchases 1.
  • For Wego, the setup carries less operational risk because Triple-A handles the payment flow, regulatory compliance, and currency conversion. Wego still receives settlement in local currencies. Settlement timing is not specified 2.

Wego’s move offers a simpler route for businesses to use stablecoins

  • This setup lets large consumer companies accept stablecoins without handling them directly. A payments provider takes care of conversion and compliance 2.
  • Triple-A says Farfetch, an online luxury fashion marketplace, recorded a 25% year-over-year increase in stablecoin transactions after adding stablecoin payments through Triple-A 3.
  • Triple-A also lists Razer, a consumer electronics and gaming brand, and Farfetch among its customers 2. It also names Alternative Airlines, a flight-booking platform, plus Grab, a Southeast Asian ride-hailing and delivery company 2. The company says it serves more than 1,000 enterprise customers worldwide 2.
