Toyota leads Japan’s domestic EV market for first time

Toyota’s bZ4X SUV was the top-selling EV in Japan during Q4 2025, marking the first time Toyota led the country’s quarterly EV sales rankings.

Toyota, based in Japan, sold 3,448 units of the bZ4X in the period, a 22-fold rise year-on-year.

Honda’s N-ONE e: electric minivehicle ranked second with 2,732 units sold, while Nissan’s Sakura electric minivehicle placed third at 1,895 units.

The result follows a partial update to the bZ4X in October, which extended its maximum driving range to 746 kilometers on a single charge, the longest among local automakers’ EVs.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Toyota’s Q4 bump came from pricing, Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) still niche in Japan

  • Q4 2025 bZ4X deliveries hit 3,448, about 8.6% of 2025 non-kei Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) registrations at 39,885. BEVs held 1.6% share overall.
  • A 22-fold jump followed a range upgrade to 746 km with prices held down. Hybrids took 33.8% in H1 2025.
  • BYD (Build Your Dreams) sold 3,742 units in 2025, almost matching Toyota’s Q4 figure. Imported BEVs averaged about ¥7.37 million in H1 2025 versus around ¥3.53 million for domestic models.

Charging networks face near-term hurdles as subsidies rise

  • Japan’s revised Eco-Car Subsidy lifts the BEV cap from ¥900,000 to ¥1.3 million in January 2026. Sales fell for five straight quarters through Q1 2025, which flags gaps in charging and model choice. Toyota bundles one year of free charging with the bZ4X, which shifts payments to automakers and pressures independent charging networks (third-party public charging providers).
  • Kei cars, the country’s small low-tax microcars, made up 33.4% of passenger sales in H1 2025. Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV offer about 180 km of range, so near-home charging could grow before highway fast charging.
  • Energy management vendors, companies that optimize charging loads along with grid usage, should watch Honda’s N-ONE e: with over 295 km range and about ¥2.69 million. If kei BEV gains hold, regional build-outs look justified.
