🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Toyota’s strategic pivot to Indonesia’s digital used car market builds on deeper investment history

Toyota’s $120 million investment in Astra Digital Mobil represents a strategic diversification beyond its core manufacturing business in Indonesia, building on a much longer investment history.

This move follows Toyota’s 2019 announcement of a $2 billion investment to develop electric vehicles in Indonesia, showing the company’s multi-pronged approach to the Indonesian market 1.

The investment in the used car market makes financial sense against declining new car sales in Indonesia, which fell by 14% in 2024 to just 801,000 units, the lowest since 2011 outside the pandemic year 2.

Toyota has maintained a significant manufacturing presence in Indonesia for decades through Toyota Astra Motor (51% owned by Astra), giving it deep market knowledge to leverage in this digital expansion 3.

The company’s earlier investments in Indonesian manufacturing facilities, including a $230 million engine plant in Karawang that created 600 jobs, demonstrate its long-term commitment to the country’s automotive ecosystem 4.

2️⃣ Digital transformation reshaping Indonesia’s fragmented used car market amid economic pressures

The partnership targets Indonesia’s highly fragmented used car market at a time when rising living costs and economic uncertainty are driving consumers toward more affordable vehicle options.

The Southeast Asian used car market is valued at approximately $106.5 billion with projections to reach $156.9 billion by 2028, creating significant opportunities for digitally-enabled players 5.

Digital platforms have changed consumer behavior, with 86% of Indonesian car buyers now using online platforms for price research before making a purchase decision 6.

This transformation is part of a broader digital shift in Indonesia, where mobile internet penetration reached 79.5% of the population by January 2024, enabling the growth of online automotive marketplaces 6.
