Toyota Canada deploys seven humanoid robots to build SUVs

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) has contracted seven humanoid robots from Agility Robotics after a year-long pilot to help build RAV4 SUVs.

The robots are designed to operate in industrial settings without humans nearby.

They mainly unload auto parts from automated warehouse tuggers.

This is a rare example of humanoid robots integrated into real manufacturing workflows.

Agility’s Digit robots are also used by logistics firms such as GXO Logistics, Schaeffler, and Amazon, managed through its Arc software.

The partnership aims to explore more use cases to reduce manual labor and improve efficiency.

Agility is developing next-generation robots safe to work alongside humans, though current models still face reliability issues.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Toyota robot lease follows a scalable model

  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada signed a contract with Agility Robotics through a “robots-as-a-service” (RaaS) lease, not a purchase 1.
  • RaaS drives most of Agility’s sales. Contrary Research estimates payback in under two years versus a human worker earning $30 per hour 2.
  • The Ontario plant is moving to seven robots after a pilot that began with three systems 3.
  • Agility builds credibility one job at a time. At Toyota, Digit unloads auto parts totes from automated warehouse tuggers, and other deployments follow the same sequence before broader tasks 3.

Humanoid robots add an automation layer between machines

  • The Toyota setup places Digit between existing automated systems 1.
  • Digit unloads auto parts from an automated warehouse tugger then hands off to another machine. The work needs mobility and flexible handling 1.
  • This pattern can make a factory easier to reconfigure than single-purpose industrial robots 4.
  • Digit runs in zones separated from human workers. That constraint remains a hurdle 1.
  • Agility is aiming for safe, direct human-robot collaboration in next-generation models. That could expand use beyond logistics and support more roles on site 1.
