Top PC makers eye Chinese memory chips: report

Major PC manufacturers HP, Dell, Acer, and Asus are considering sourcing Chinese-made memory chips amid ongoing global supply shortages, according to Nikkei Asia.

The supply crunch has caused concerns over delays and rising costs across the tech industry.

HP has begun evaluating products from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and plans to monitor the supply situation until mid-2026, with potential plans to source from CXMT for non-US markets if DRAM shortages persist.

Dell is also qualifying CXMT’s DRAM products to address anticipated price increases.

Acer has expressed openness to using Chinese memory chips if Chinese suppliers purchase them, while Asus has asked its Chinese partners to help source chips for notebook projects.

Reuters was unable to verify the report independently, and the companies did not respond to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This PC memory shortage is a direct result of the AI gold rush

  • Memory supply has tightened as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shift production from consumer DRAM and NAND to higher-margin parts for AI data centers, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and high-capacity DDR5 1.
  • That shift leaves fewer silicon wafers for everyday products, since HBM stacks paired with an Nvidia AI data-center GPU compete with LPDDR5X for mid-range smartphones and the solid-state drive (SSD) in consumer laptops 1.
  • PC brands such as HP, Dell, Acer, and Asus face the squeeze as they push AI PCs like Microsofts Copilot+ PCs, which require at least 16GB of RAM while prices rise and availability drops 1.
  • Dell COO Jeff Clarke called it the worst shortage Ive ever seen, adding that demand is way ahead of supply due to AI infrastructure 2.

PC makers’ plan B could collide with US policy

  • Some US PC makers, including HP and Dell, are looking at Chinas ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) as an alternative source, with Nikkei Asia reporting they are evaluating or qualifying CXMTs DRAM amid the crunch 3.
  • CXMT may face new restrictions, since reporting citing people familiar with the matter says it has been considered for the U.S. Commerce Departments Entity List (a trade restriction list that can limit a companys access to US technology) 4.
  • The House Select Committee on China has criticized the Commerce Department for not already adding CXMT, calling it a loophole in export controls and urging action 5.
  • Any reliance on a supplier that could be sanctioned adds uncertainty, while separate reporting says Japanese firms lobbied against putting CXMT on the Entity List in late 2024 6, 7.
