Japanese mobile food ordering startup gets $48m

Dinii, a Tokyo-based startup specializing in mobile food ordering, has raised US$48 million (7.46 billion yen) from investors, including Bessemer Venture Partners and Hillhouse Investment Management.

Founded in 2018, Dinii processes restaurant ordering and delivery using the cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) platform. It facilitates mobile ordering, QR code payments, and customer relationship management.

The POS system will support additional features such as employee management, reservations, and food delivery.

Dinii currently supports around 3,000 restaurants in Japan, a small segment of the 900,000 eateries nationwide.

The company plans to expand to other Japanese cities and Southeast Asian markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

Many restaurants in Japan still rely on traditional POS systems, which are often costly.
