TNG Digital, KK Mart roll out e-wallet salary for migrants
TNG Digital has partnered retailer KK Mart to pay migrant workers’ salaries through the e-wallet across the country, targeting workers who struggle to open bank accounts.
TNG eWallet has been approved by Peninsular Malaysia’s labor department as a salary account provider and processed payments for over 160,000 migrant workers in 2025.
KK Mart, a Malaysian convenience store chain, is among the first major retailers in the country to use e-wallet salary payments at scale.
The workers receive wages in real time and use the funds for purchases and transfers through DuitNow without a traditional bank account.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
TNG’s migrant worker service rests on government approval and in-person agent support
- Touch ’n Go eWallet sits within a formal Malaysian framework. The Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM) recognizes certain salary payment instrument issuers, including non-bank firms, as salary payment providers 1.
- The service also depends on in-person access. A partnership with Singapore-based Dotlines, which runs digital and financial service distribution networks, gives TNG eWallet 12,000 touchpoints for assisted account activation and top-ups near workers’ homes 2.
- For some needs, the eWallet works as a bank account alternative. It includes remittances to more than 50 countries plus a Visa card for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cash withdrawals 3.
This approach widens access to finance and moves wages away from cash
- TNG eWallet helps employers handle payroll, including firms with remote sites such as plantations. That can cut cash handling risks plus reduce day-to-day admin for businesses 4.
- TNG Digital says nearly 45% of Malaysia’s migrant workers cannot open a bank account. Bringing them into digital payments can create transaction records 3.
- Those records can support later offerings such as micro-loans or insurance. That gives the inclusion effort commercial value and offers a model for other developing economies.
