Tinder brings back double date feature after 2017 hiatus
Tinder has brought back a double-dating feature called Double Date in the United States. This follows the discontinuation of a similar product in 2017 due to privacy concerns.
The feature allows users to invite friends via text to pair up and match with other couples on the app. It has been tested in countries such as Belgium, Spain, and Germany, and is expected to expand globally by July.
Users can create a separate profile for double dating, while their individual profiles remain unchanged. Up to three friends can join a double date.
With the new Double Date feature, Tinder aims to provide users with more control and privacy.
Double Date is part of several initiatives Match Group is pursuing to attract younger and female users. These efforts aim to refresh the brand’s image and enhance user experiences amid short-term revenue challenges.
Match reported that nearly 15% of users who accepted Double Date invites in Europe were either new users or recently reactivated accounts. The company also observed higher retention rates among users engaging with the feature, especially those under 29.
Tinder’s parent company, Match Group, has noted that younger users are interested in meeting people through friends, reflecting trends seen on rival apps like Bumble.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Dating apps are returning to social roots amid declining engagement
Tinder’s double-dating reintroduction reflects a trend of dating apps adopting more social, community-based approaches after years of focusing on one-to-one matching.
The app’s declining subscriber numbers—from over 11 million in late 2022 to about 9.1 million today—highlight broader industry challenges in maintaining user engagement through purely individual swiping mechanisms 1.
This shift isn’t unique to Tinder; competitor Bumble is also revamping its “BFF” friend-finding feature, signaling an industry-wide recognition that purely algorithmic matchmaking has limitations 2.
Dating apps initially gained popularity through social diffusion. For instance, Tinder’s early growth was driven by campus representatives promoting the app at sorority and fraternity events, leveraging existing social networks rather than individual browsing 3.
The reintroduction of group features represents a strategic return to dating’s fundamentally social nature after years of apps focusing on individualization and algorithm-driven matching.
2️⃣ Female user engagement drives product innovation in dating apps
