TikTok works with US vice president after deadline extension

TikTok thanked US President Donald Trump for extending the deadline on its future in the country to September 17, 2025.

The platform also said it was still working with Vice President JD Vance to find a resolution.

The extension allows TikTok to continue serving its 170 million users in the US.

However, negotiations remain complex due to geopolitical tensions and regulatory issues.

Talks had previously collapsed, and there have been no updates from Vance’s office since March.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ TikTok’s evolution from entertainment app to geopolitical chess piece

TikTok’s transformation illustrates how quickly digital platforms can become national security concerns in today’s geopolitical landscape.

When TikTok launched internationally in 2017 after ByteDance’s $1 billion acquisition of Musical.ly, concerns were primarily about music licensing and artist compensation, not national security1.

By 2019, TikTok had reached 500 million monthly active users and became the third most downloaded app globally, demonstrating its rapid rise to cultural significance1.

The platform’s journey from entertainment app to the center of US-China tech tensions demonstrates how digital platforms can quickly become proxies in larger geopolitical conflicts.

This pattern follows other Chinese tech companies like Huawei and ZTE that have faced similar scrutiny, highlighting how consumer technology increasingly intersects with national security considerations.

2️⃣ Economic consequences complicate the regulatory decision-making

The substantial economic impact of TikTok in the US creates significant complications for policymakers considering a ban.

TikTok contributed approximately $24.2 billion to the US economy in 2023 alone, while helping generate $15 billion in revenue for small and medium businesses who rely on the platform for customer outreach2.
