TikTok tests new feature for location reviews in videos

TikTok is testing a new feature that allows users to view reviews for specific locations in the comments section of videos.

This feature, labeled as a “Reviews” tab, is currently accessible to select users.

When a video includes a tagged location, users can click the tab to see star ratings, written reviews, and photos from other users.

For instance, a video tagged with Central Park in New York City would show content specific to that location.

Users can also view the TikTok profiles of reviewers by clicking on their usernames.

This update is part of TikTok’s efforts to improve its search functionality and compete with platforms like Google.

TikTok has not confirmed if or when the reviews feature will be available to a broader audience.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ TikTok’s entry into reviews marks the next chapter in online feedback evolution

Online reviews have transformed dramatically since their 1999 emergence on platforms like eBay and Epinions, where they collectively generated over 1.1 million reviews in their first year 1.

The landscape has continually evolved through major milestones: Yellow Pages and City Search incorporating reviews in 2001, Google’s acquisition of Deja in 2002, and Yelp’s founding in 2004 focusing initially on healthcare reviews 2.

By integrating location reviews directly into video comments, TikTok is addressing a fundamental consumer need—72% of consumers won’t make purchases without reading reviews first, according to research 1.

This move represents a progression in how platforms deliver review content, transitioning from dedicated review sites to embedding feedback directly within the discovery experience itself.

TikTok’s approach addresses the growing demand for convenience by eliminating steps between discovery and validation, potentially giving it an advantage over traditional review platforms that require users to navigate to separate websites.

2️⃣ TikTok’s systematic challenge to Google’s search dominance
