TikTok Shop launches in Japan despite US uncertainty
TikTok has launched its e-commerce service, TikTok Shop, in Japan, enabling users to buy products directly through videos.
This platform was introduced on July 1, 2025, marking the app’s entry into its 17th global market.
The launch is part of TikTok’s strategy to broaden its international presence and reduce dependence on the US market, where its future remains uncertain.
The app faced pressure from US President Donald Trump to sell its American operations to local investors, which required approval from Beijing.
Japan, home to 33 million monthly TikTok users, presents a notable opportunity for the app to monetize its audience. The country’s e-commerce sector is currently dominated by companies like Rakuten and Amazon.
TikTok Shop allows users to buy items featured in influencer videos and live streams.
Several Japanese brands, including Ya-Man, Wego, and Kanebo Kate, are set to open stores on TikTok Shop.
