TikTok says Tokopedia layoffs due to team size, business needs
TikTok has confirmed layoffs at Tokopedia, saying the move followed a review of team size and business needs.
Tokopedia is an Indonesia-based ecommerce platform now controlled by TikTok after a merger.
A TikTok spokesperson told Bisnis on August 25 that the company regularly evaluates business needs and makes adjustments to strengthen its organization and provide better service to users.
The layoffs reportedly affected 420 employees in two rounds: 180 in July 2025, and 240 a month later.
TikTok remains committed to investing in Tokopedia and Indonesia.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Post-merger layoffs reflect common overlapping role elimination patterns
The TikTok-Tokopedia layoffs follow a predictable post-acquisition pattern where merged companies eliminate duplicate positions across similar functions.
The 420 employees laid off in two phases specifically targeted areas with natural overlap—logistics, operations, marketing, and warehousing—following TikTok’s $1.5 billion acquisition of Tokopedia2.
This type of “synergy realization” through workforce reduction is standard practice in major tech mergers, as companies seek to justify acquisition costs by streamlining operations.
The timing suggests TikTok needed several months post-merger to identify redundant roles, with the first wave of 180 layoffs in July followed by 240 more employees in August1.
Even after these cuts, the combined entity will maintain around 2,500 employees in Indonesia, indicating the layoffs represented roughly 14-16% of the total workforce2.
2️⃣ Market consolidation intensifies as TikTok Shop gains ground against established players
The layoffs occur as TikTok Shop rapidly closes the gap with market leader Shopee, creating a more concentrated e-commerce landscape in Indonesia.
While Shopee still dominates with 53.22% market share in 2025, TikTok Shop has more than doubled its presence from 12.20% to 27.37% in just one year1.
