In 50 Words: Alarm grows in Indonesia over TikTok’s Project S
Indonesia’s Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, has raised concerns about TikTok’s Project S, fearing it may threaten domestic microbusinesses and SMEs.
While TikTok’s new initiative is still under development, it has already prompted Masduki to call for revisions in the country’s online trading laws, including regulations against direct cross-border ecommerce sales. TikTok responded to these concerns, clarifying that Project S is unavailable in Indonesia and that the company does not operate cross-border sales.
A TikTok Shop seller who asked to be identified only as Frizka shared similar concerns, telling Tech in Asia that Project S could be a threat to her business.
