TikTok has shared aggregate user data with the Indonesian government to avoid a license suspension in its largest Southeast Asian market.

Officials said the data included web-traffic trends and information on suspected online gambling activity, but stressed it could not be used to track individual users.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has over 100 million users in Indonesia.

The government briefly suspended TikTok’s operating license last week after the company failed to provide user data for a period in late August, when the death of a delivery driver helped fuel ongoing protests.

Internet companies often resist government data requests, fearing the exposure of proprietary information and potential backlash from users.

For TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd., the matter is particularly sensitive.
