TikTok to invest $25b in Thailand digital infrastructure
Thailand approved TikTok’s US$25 billion plan to add servers and expand data storage and processing capacity across Bangkok and the provinces of Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao, the Board of Investment said on May 6.
The expansion comes as demand for digital services rises.
The plan is up from TikTok’s earlier proposal of US$8.8 billion over five years.
It was the largest of six projects worth US$29 billion that the Thai government approved that day.
The board also said TikTok committed to develop digital literacy and ecommerce courses for Thai entrepreneurs and workers.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Thailand is building a broader investment base
- TikTok plans to invest US$25 billion in Thailand as part of a roughly US$29 billion package that also covers recycled plastics, wind power, and potassium chloride production for fertilizer 1.
- This also fits into a separate roughly US$27 billion push in data centers plus data hosting. That includes about US$1.4 billion from United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based DAMAC Group’s Skyline Data Center and Cloud Services Co., Ltd., a data center developer 2.
- The same push also includes about US$746 million from Singapore’s Bridge Data Centres IIO (Thailand) Co., Ltd., another data center operator 2.
- Thailand is using its “Thailand FastPass” mechanism to speed approvals and permits, while helping agencies work together so priority projects can start sooner 2.
- The government is also moving ahead with Direct Renewable Power Purchase Agreements (Direct PPA), which would let private companies buy and sell renewable electricity directly. Participation rules and grid-service charges have not been announced yet 2.
The plan spreads risk for TikTok and heats up regional competition
- The investment expands TikTok’s presence in Southeast Asia as the company faces regulatory pressure in Western markets 3.
- Its size adds pressure on Vietnam and Malaysia, which are also trying to land large technology infrastructure projects and stronger claims as regional digital hubs.
- The facilities are meant to meet rising demand for digital services and reinforce Thailand’s place in regional digital infrastructure 1.
- The project could help both TikTok and Thailand benefit from the next wave of AI-driven digital services over the coming years.
