TikTok fuels ByteDance’s revenue to $155b

ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, reported a revenue increase of 29%, totaling US$155 billion for 2024.

This growth was attributed to TikTok’s global expansion, which helped mitigate economic challenges in China.

International sales rose by 63% to US$39 billion, constituting about 25% of the company’s total revenue. The net profit for the year was approximately US$33 billion.

While TikTok experienced rapid international growth, ByteDance’s overall revenue growth decelerated compared to the previous year.

In 2023, the company reported a 50% revenue increase, from US$80 billion to nearly US$120 billion.

Domestically, its flagship app Douyin faced difficulties amid China’s economic slowdown. This resulted in TikTok playing a more significant role in generating revenue.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ ByteDance’s international business becomes its growth engine amid China slowdown

ByteDance’s international revenue jumped 63% to $39 billion, growing more than twice as fast as its overall business (29%), highlighting a strategic pivot as domestic growth cools.

This international segment now accounts for approximately 25% of ByteDance’s total revenue, marking a significant shift for a Chinese tech company in global markets.

The growth differential between international and domestic operations reflects broader challenges in China’s economy, where consumer spending has remained sluggish despite government stimulus efforts.

This international success stands in contrast to the historical pattern of Chinese tech giants who have typically derived the vast majority of their revenue from their massive home market.

TikTok’s global popularity has helped ByteDance achieve this milestone, demonstrating a rare case of a Chinese consumer app achieving mainstream adoption across Western markets.

2️⃣ TikTok’s user engagement translates to significant economic value

TikTok users spend an average of 34 hours and 15 minutes on the app monthly, making it one of the most engaging social platforms and creating substantial monetization opportunities.
