TikTok eyes short-drama push to tap growing segment

TikTok is testing a dedicated short-drama feed in the US and several other markets, and is moving toward original production, Business Insider reported.

TikTok has begun casting for a soap opera-style short-drama project.

The company previously filed a US trademark application for “TikTok Drama” that covers services such as developing and producing short drama series, TV programs, and webisodes.

Short dramas are typically one- to five-minute vertical episodes and have become a fast-growing category in the US, which could bring TikTok into closer competition with mini-drama partners already on the app such as SnackShort, NetShort, and YuzuDrama.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The short-drama market is already a multi-billion dollar global business

  • Short-drama apps are closing in on $2.3 billion in cumulative in-app purchase revenue as of March 2025 1.
  • Global in-app purchase revenue reached nearly $700 million in Q1 2025, almost four times Q1 2024 1.
  • The US drove 49% of worldwide revenue in Q1 2025, which puts it at the center of the competition 1.
  • ReelShort and DramaBox lead the category, with cumulative revenue of $490 million and $450 million as of March 2025 1.

TikTok’s strategy creates a dilemma for its mini-drama partners

  • TikTok distributes partner-made mini dramas while testing its own dedicated short-drama feed, which puts short-drama publishers in a tough spot when they depend on TikTok for reach 2.
  • The test feed currently streams episodes for free, unlike the freemium model where early episodes are free and the rest sit behind payment 2.
  • TikTok also features 20 third-party short-drama feeds through its minis program and promotes its separate mini-drama app, PineDrama 2.
  • Studios such as DramaBox spend heavily on TikTok ads to push their standalone apps, yet they may end up facing TikTok as a rival on the same platform 2.
