Tiger Global-backed SaaS firm considers moving HQ to India
CleverTap, a Tiger Global-backed customer engagement and retention SaaS platform, is considering moving its HQ from San Francisco back to India, as it aligns with the company’s preparations for an IPO in India.
Founded in Mumbai in 2013 and currently headquartered in Mountain View, California, CleverTap secured US$105 million in a Series D funding round led by global investment group CDPQ in 2022.
With contributions from IIFL’s Asset Management Company and existing investors like Tiger Global and Sequoia India, the firm’s valuation now exceeds US$600 million.
This potential relocation reflects a broader trend of startups returning to India after initially moving abroad, a shift that offers considerable advantages, such as tax incentives and simplified regulatory navigation.
Recent policy changes from the Indian corporate affairs ministry, effective last month, have streamlined processes for overseas startups merging with their wholly-owned Indian subsidiaries.
The updates now require only Reserve Bank of India approval, bypassing the traditional National Company Law Tribunal clearance, which often prolonged such transitions.
