Thrive Capital reportedly invests $1b in OpenAI

Thrive Capital invested about US$1 billion in OpenAI in December at a US$285 billion valuation, according to a source cited by CNBC.

This deal was separate from a larger funding round that could total over US$100 billion and boost OpenAI’s valuation to US$800 billion, CNBC reported.

Thrive Capital has been a long-term investor in OpenAI and is likely to join the ongoing funding round, which is closing in phases, a source said.

About 90% of the initial funds come from strategic investors like Nvidia, SoftBank, and Amazon, according to CNBC.

OpenAI also took an ownership stake in Thrive Holdings, a separate company focused on acquiring businesses that could benefit from AI; financial terms were not disclosed.

The funding round is still ongoing, with more investors expected to join.

Thrive Capital recently closed a fund exceeding US$10 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The OpenAI and Thrive deal ties money to day to day work

  • The numbers draw attention, yet the deal also covers how the companies will work together. OpenAI will take an equity stake in Thrive Holdings, a separate company that buys businesses that could gain from AI 1.
  • Thrive Holdings runs like an AI focused buyout shop. It purchases firms in older fields such as accounting and IT services, then looks for ways AI can lift results 1.
  • The terms link OpenAI’s share to outcomes, not a one time purchase. If Thrive Holdings’ owned companies perform well, OpenAI’s stake grows, and OpenAI also gets paid for its services, according to people familiar with the deal cited by CNBC 2.

OpenAI’s dealmaking can blur the lines between customer, partner, and investor

  • The Thrive arrangement fits a wider pattern some describe as “circular dealmaking,” where OpenAI becomes tightly intertwined with investors and suppliers 1.
  • In an earlier example, OpenAI invested in CoreWeave. CoreWeave used that cash to buy Nvidia chips, which later supplied computing power to OpenAI, lifting CoreWeave’s value and OpenAI’s initial position 1.
  • With Thrive Holdings buying and running companies that may adopt OpenAI tools, OpenAI links product use with its investment ties. That overlap, plus Thrive Capital holding stakes on both sides, can complicate outside investors’ efforts to judge whether results come from broad demand or from benefits that may fade without OpenAI’s direct involvement 1.
