Thailand’s data center capacity set to reach 1 GW in 2027

Thailand’s data center capacity is set to triple by 2027, driven by about US$6.5 billion in planned investments to support cloud computing and AI demand.

Supparat Singhara Na Ayutthaya, vice chairman of the Thai Data Center Association, said capacity should reach about 1 gigawatt in 2027, up from 350 megawatts in 2024.

A typical data center in Thailand requires an investment of around US$10 million per megawatt, according to Supparat.

Major global tech firms including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia are investing in AI infrastructure across Thailand and Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s Board of Investments approved 322 billion baht (US$9.9 billion) for 36 tech projects in the first half of 2024, with most targeted at data centers.

The Thai Data Center Association is monitoring potential impacts from possible US restrictions on AI chip shipments.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Southeast Asia’s supply shortage creates massive opportunity for Thailand

Thailand’s rapid data center expansion comes at a perfect time to capture regional demand that other markets can’t meet.

Southeast Asia faces a projected supply shortage of 15 to 25 gigawatts by 2027/2028, while expected regional demand will reach 45-55 gigawatts 2.

Thailand’s plan to triple capacity from 350 megawatts to 1 gigawatt by 2027 positions it to capture a meaningful portion of this unmet demand 1.

The timing advantage becomes clearer when comparing growth rates: Thailand’s operational capacity already increased by about 80% in 2024, while the entire Asia Pacific region currently has just 13.3 gigawatts of operational capacity 2.

This supply-demand mismatch explains why major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia are all investing in Thai infrastructure 1.

2️⃣ Thailand’s investment math reveals the true scale of data center capital requirements

The $6.5 billion flowing into Thailand’s data center sector demonstrates the enormous capital intensity of AI infrastructure buildout.
