Thailand enters global startup top 50, leads ASEAN in medtech
Thailand ranked 49th in StartupBlink’s 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, its first top-50 finish in six years, while placing first in Southeast Asia for medtech and eighth globally in that sector.
The index, which covered 120 countries and more than 1,500 cities, said Thailand’s startup ecosystem rose 62.6%, and Bangkok climbed to 76th worldwide and led ASEAN in robotics startups.
Thailand was the region’s fourth-ranked ecosystem behind Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, according to the National Innovation Agency, a Thai government body focused on innovation.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Private capital still backs FinTech and logistics over targeted tech sectors
- Thailand placed first in Southeast Asia for medtech startups in StartupBlink’s 2026 index, yet funding has flowed elsewhere 1.
- From 2010 to 2022, non-innovation-driven fields led by FinTech and logistics took more than 80% of Thailand’s disclosed fundraising value among innovation-driven enterprises 2.
- Targeted sectors included BioTech, AgriTech and HealthTech. FoodTech, TravelTech and EdTech were also part of the mix. Together they made up 16% of disclosed fundraising, or US$137 million 2.
- Part of the gap comes from a thin pool of distinctive deep-tech startups that can scale, while many Thai companies fit local demand better than global markets and resemble rivals abroad 3.
Corporate investors and few exits weigh on the ecosystem
- The higher ranking can hide a startup valley of death, the stretch when young companies cannot raise enough money to keep growing. Only 16% of Thai startups reach series A, while 7% move to series B and 1% reach series C 2.
- Growth has relied heavily on corporate venture capital (CVC), the investment arms of large companies. At the 2021 peak, corporate venture investors joined nearly half of Thailand’s startup rounds, which raised valuations and put off international venture capital firms 3.
- The market also lacks enough successful exits, especially initial public offerings (IPOs), when companies list shares on a stock exchange. That slows the return of experienced founders, staff, and capital into the startup ecosystem 3.
