Thailand consumer watchdog to sue Meta over scam ads

Thailand’s Consumer Council said it plans to file a civil suit against Meta’s Facebook on June 8, alleging the platform let scammers use ads to defraud users and failed to protect consumers in the country.

The watchdog said it recorded 3,793 complaints linked to Facebook between 2024 and 2026.

These included undelivered goods, alleged fake investment schemes, impersonation using victims’ names and photos, and pages meant to mislead buyers.

The council said Thailand has about 51 million Facebook users.

It also said it had spent more than a year asking Meta, including its Thailand operations, to block fraudulent ads.

Meta previously said it invests in measures to detect and remove scam content, and works with regulators and law enforcement agencies to curb misuse of its platforms.
