Thailand approved its first national strategy for semiconductors and advanced electronics on September 24, laying out a long-term plan to build a domestic chip ecosystem covering research and design, manufacturing, assembly, packaging, testing, and high-value electronics applications.

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), the country’s investment promotion agency, said the strategy aims to attract about US$80 billion in cumulative investment by 2050, generate about US$150 billion in annual industry revenue, and create more than 230,000 jobs.

It identified photonics, power semiconductors, and sensors as priority technologies.

The BOI said it received 879 investment-promotion applications worth about US$27.2 billion from 2023 through the first half of 2026 for semiconductor and advanced electronics projects.

Infineon Technologies, a German chipmaker focused on power semiconductors and automotive chips, is due to open its first factory in Thailand in Samut Prakan on October 1.

The facility will produce and package advanced power modules.

The BOI said the strategy will be supported by incentives, workforce development, upgraded research and chip-design infrastructure, investment-ready infrastructure, and regulatory reform.
