Thailand approves $2b across AI, electronics
Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) approved nine investment projects worth US$1.99 billion on July 8 across AI, advanced electronics, aviation, clean energy, and food sectors.
The approvals come as manufacturers continue repositioning their supply chains across Southeast Asia.
The biggest tech approvals included DataSection (Thailand)’s US$235.2 million investment in graphics processing unit servers for data hosting in Bangkok and Pathum Thani.
Doosan Electro-Materials (Thailand) and Taiwan Union Technology (Thailand) also won approval for circuit board-material plants worth a combined US$369.4 million.
DataSection has arranged financing for GPU server acquisitions tied to AI infrastructure expansion in Thailand, Japan, and Australia.
The electronics-material projects align with a broader printed circuit board boom.
Thailand already hosts 180 PCB projects worth more than 200 billion baht (US$5.99 billion) as companies diversify production and target demand from electric vehicles and AI servers.
Other approvals included Nestlé (Thai)’s coffee plant expansion, Thai Airways International’s lease of eight passenger aircraft, and two wind power projects.
The BOI also expanded an energy panel into a subcommittee to screen data center investments, as researchers flagged flood risk, renewable power availability, and environmental reviews as factors in site selection.
