Tether backs stablecoin payments firm Speed in $8m round
Tether has led an US$8 million investment in Speed, a payments company that integrates Bitcoin’s Lightning Network with stablecoin settlements.
Speed, which operates payments using both Lightning and Tether’s USDT stablecoin, processes about US$1.5 billion in annual transactions and serves 1.2 million users.
Tether said the funding will help expand USDT’s use in everyday payments and strengthen financial infrastructure aligned with Bitcoin.
The deal follows Tether’s recent investments in sectors ranging from agriculture to health apps and video platforms.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Speed’s $1.5 billion in transaction volume may overstate merchant-payment adoption
- The company handled $1.5 billion across 1.2 million users, though the share from merchant payments is unclear versus peer transfers or in-app trading within its wallet base 1.
- A Steak ‘n Shake case study says “double-digit sales growth” 1. Without merchant revenue splits that $1.5 billion could lean toward wallet-to-wallet activity rather than Lightning point-of-sale use.
- Money transmission runs under a Money Services Business (MSB) license via CoinX USA LLC 2. Regulatory filings on served jurisdictions and payment-processor partners would clarify real commerce reach versus crypto-native circulation.
Payment infrastructure builders should target high-stablecoin regions with Lightning Network tooling
- APAC posted 69% year-over-year growth in crypto adoption 3. India, Pakistan, and Vietnam lead, which aligns with Speed’s USDT–Lightning play for high-cost remittance lanes.
- Gateway or POS developers can pair Lightning Network acceptance with USDT settlement to meet demand in Latin America, up 63% 3. Sub-Saharan Africa grew 52% 3. Stablecoins anchor transaction volumes worldwide 3.
- On-ramp or compliance fintechs could serve users where rules are murky yet adoption is strong, like Bangladesh or parts of North Africa 4. Stablecoin transactions rose 83% to more than $4 trillion in seven months 4.
