X tests pay-per-use API model

X is expanding the closed beta of its pay-per-use API plan to more developers, according to a post from its developer account on October 20, 2025.

The company is now accepting applications for the program, offering selected users a US$500 voucher to test the API.

X, formerly known as Twitter, overhauled its API pricing in 2023, ending free access and introducing several paid tiers, including a US$200-per-month basic plan and a US$42,000-per-month enterprise plan.

The new pay-per-use model lets developers estimate costs for specific API requests, differing from the previous flat-rate system and removing monthly tier caps.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pricing uncertainty complicates cost planning for developers

  • X posted per-request prices on its new API page for reading posts and creating posts 1. Prices also cover DMs, trends, and bookmarks 1.
  • X has not said if the old tier plan will go away as the beta grows 1. That gap makes long runs harder to plan 1.
  • Under the old plan reading 15,000 posts and publishing 50,000 posts cost $200 per month on Basic 2. The same activity now runs about $575 per month at $0.005 per read and $0.01 per post 2.
  • The closed beta has expanded, but X has not given a general availability date that signals a broad rollout 1. Teams lack a clear timeline for terms, which slows plans 1.

API management vendors can capture demand from voucher recipients

  • Tool makers alongside API platforms can offer cost forecasts, spend limits, plus smart caching that cuts repeat calls 1. These fit X’s metered pay-per-use model 1.
  • The $500 voucher gives vendors a clear opening 1. They can target beta participants with quick-start Software Development Kits (SDKs), batching optimizations (sending multiple operations in one request), plus templates to stretch the voucher while proving cost control 1.
  • Vendors need the beta’s application criteria, eligibility rules, plus voucher redemption timing. That info lets teams time outreach, partnerships, plus launches with X’s application windows or onboarding.
