Tesla’s EU car sales drop 27.9% in May despite EV market growth
Tesla’s car sales in Europe decreased by 27.9% in May 2025 compared to the same month last year, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
This decline occurs amid a 27.2% increase in overall fully-electric vehicle sales in the region.
Tesla’s market share in Europe fell to 1.2% in May, down from 1.8% a year earlier. This marks the fifth consecutive month of declining sales for the US-based automaker.
Competition from more affordable Chinese electric vehicles intensifies, and the company’s updated Model Y has not yet reversed this trend.
In contrast, total car sales in Europe rose by 1.9% in May.
In the EU, total car sales for the year have decreased by 0.6% so far. This is despite the rising demand for electric vehicles.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tesla’s dramatic market position reversal in Europe
Tesla’s current European sales decline represents a stark reversal from its rapid ascent just a few years ago.
When the Model 3 launched in Europe in early 2019, it quickly dominated the market, capturing 31% of the EV segment and becoming the top-selling premium midsize sedan despite its higher price point 1.
By September 2019, the Model 3 registered 17,500 units, making it the 11th best-selling vehicle overall in Europe and accounting for nearly half of the BEV market share 2.
This contrasts dramatically with today’s reality where Tesla’s market share has plummeted to just 1.2% from 1.8% a year ago, with Germany (Europe’s largest auto market) showing a particularly steep 60% decline in Tesla sales in early 2025 3.
The current decline reflects both intensifying competition and changing market dynamics, with Volkswagen Group now dominating with nearly half of Germany’s total EV sales while Chinese manufacturers like BYD and MG have significantly increased their sales 3.
2️⃣ Government incentives create boom-bust cycles in EV adoption
Tesla’s European journey illustrates how government policies significantly influence EV market performance, creating volatile sales patterns.
