Tesla, Xiaomi offer cheaper loans to lure Chinese EV buyers

Tesla has introduced low-interest, seven-year car loans in China to boost EV sales, prompting competitors like Xpeng and Xiaomi to follow with similar financing offers.

The loans feature an annual interest rate of 1.36 percent, allowing buyers to pay less than 2,000 yuan (US$288) monthly after an 80,000 yuan (US$11,530) down payment.

This marks the first time an automaker in China has offered a seven-year loan, replacing the previous five-year maximum, and the rate is below standard consumer loans of around 3 percent.

Xiaomi, which sold more SU7 sedans than Tesla’s Model 3 in 2025, also launched a seven-year loan at 1 percent interest.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The financing race is the latest front in a direct rivalry between Xiaomi and Tesla

  • Xiaomi rolled out a seven-year low-interest loan nine days after Tesla offered a similar deal in China. The timing captures how quickly each reacts 1.
  • Xiaomi positions the YU7 SUV as a direct rival to Tesla’s Model Y 1.
  • A price fight is underway. The YU7 starts at 253,500 yuan, which is 10,000 yuan under the Model Y base price of 263,500 yuan 1.
  • In December 2025, Xiaomi delivered 39,089 YU7s. Tesla sold about 66,189 Model Ys in the same month 1.

Extended car loans mark a change as China EV demand slows

  • Tesla was the first automaker to offer seven-year low-interest financing in China on January 6, during the softer early-year season 2.
  • Financing terms that cut monthly payments are taking a bigger role in competition.
  • As purchase tax incentives fade and analysts cite higher raw-material costs, automakers lean on lower payments to keep EVs within reach and protect sales momentum.
  • Quick matches from rivals like Xiaomi make longer loans more likely. Automakers and their financing arms may take on more credit risk as the market matures.
