Tesla, Volvo, Mercedes gain China’s approval for AI chatbots in cars

Tesla, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz have received approval to introduce in-car AI chatbots in China.

The Cyberspace Administration of Beijing registered Mercedes-Benz’s virtual assistant and approved Tesla Shanghai’s xBot and Volvo’s chatbot Xiao Wo on November 11, 2025.

These approvals make the three automakers the first foreign carmakers allowed to deploy generative AI assistants in vehicles for the Chinese market.

China began requiring official registration of generative AI services in April 2024 as part of its regulatory framework.
