Tesla unveils new Roadster, targets 2028 production

Tesla unveiled its new Roadster at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, reviving a sports car project first shown in 2017 after repeated delays.

CEO Elon Musk said production would begin in 2028.

At the livestreamed event, Tesla said the car, fitted with SpaceX thrusters, could accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second, according to the company’s timer.

Tesla has reopened Roadster reservations and is taking US$50,000 deposits in the US, Canada, and China, after missing every delivery target since it began accepting deposits in 2017.

Tesla has a Roadster reservation agreement, but the reviewed material did not show whether the deposits are refundable.

Street-legal vehicles in the US generally must meet federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Reviewed materials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not specifically address thrusters or other external propulsion systems.
