Tesla to launch Robotaxi service in San Francisco this weekend
Tesla plans to launch its Robotaxi service in San Francisco this weekend, according to an internal memo.
The service will include safety monitors in the driver’s seat who can access the steering wheel and brakes.
It will operate in a geofenced area covering the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Marin, the East Bay, and San Jose.
Select Tesla owners will be invited to use the paid service.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) confirmed Tesla has not obtained a permit for driverless testing or deployment.
Tesla holds a permit for autonomous software testing with a driver present. It’s unclear if a separate permit is needed when safety monitors are onboard.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) said Tesla informed them of plans to expand under a transportation charter permit, but the company hasn’t applied for permits for a fully commercial AV service.
