Tesla to launch Model Y L in China soon

Tesla said on Aug 18 that its new Model Y L, a six-seat version of the Model Y with a longer wheelbase, will launch soon in China.

The company shared a video of the upcoming model on Weibo, following earlier registration plans for the vehicle in the country.

Tesla is updating its lineup as competition intensifies in China, where firms like Xiaomi have recently introduced new EVs.

In July, Tesla’s China-made EV sales fell 8.4% as local rivals continued to offer cheaper options during an ongoing price war.

Filing information from July also shows that a longer-range, rear-wheel drive Model 3 will be introduced to the Chinese market.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Product localization becomes critical as foreign automakers face intense Chinese competition

Tesla’s introduction of the Model Y L with six seats and a longer wheelbase reflects how global automakers must adapt products to survive China’s competitive landscape.

The company’s 8.4% sales decline in July coincides with strong competition from local players like Xiaomi, whose YU7 SUV received 200,000 pre-orders within just three minutes of launch1.

Xiaomi’s pricing strategy directly challenges Tesla, with the YU7 starting at 253,500 RMB compared to the Model Y’s 263,500 RMB price point1.

The competitive pressure extends beyond pricing to product features, as the YU7 offers superior range of 835 km versus the Model Y’s 593 km1.

Tesla’s response includes not just the Model Y L but also a longer-range Model 3 variant, suggesting the company recognizes that standard global products may no longer suffice in China’s demanding market.

2️⃣ China’s EV price war threatens industry stability despite strong demand

The Chinese government’s intervention to curb aggressive pricing reveals how intense competition can undermine an entire industry’s financial health.

Average car prices in China have fallen 19% over the past two years, with some EV models seeing discounts of up to 30%23.
