Tesla’s chip timelines reveal a pattern of ambitious targets and delays

• Elon Musk says the AI5 chip design is finished, yet Tesla has kept moving the start of large-scale production further out.
• High-volume manufacturing was once penciled in for early 2026, and now looks more like mid-2027. That shift means new vehicles such as the Cybercab are likely to ship with older AI4 hardware 1.
• AI5 brings a big redesign. Musk has said it was set for January 2026 and would run at 10 times the performance of HW4, while drawing up to 800 watts in demanding driving scenes. HW4 tops out at about 160 watts 2.

Tesla’s foundry strategy is reshaping competition in the AI chip market

• Tesla plans to use Samsung in Texas plus Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) in Arizona for AI5, a split approach meant to protect supply and strengthen its hand in pricing talks 3.
• A US$16.4 to US$16.5 billion agreement for AI6 would make Tesla a large long-term customer for Samsung’s 2-nanometer process through Dec. 31, 2033. Samsung did not name the customer in its filing 4.
• That tight tie-up also adds risk. AI6 is already running about six months late, linked to Samsung’s struggles to scale its 2-nanometer production line 1.
