Tesla stops selling full self-driving as one-time purchase

Tesla will end sales of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software as a one-time purchase after February 14, CEO Elon Musk said on social media.

After that date, FSD will be offered only through a monthly subscription.

Tesla did not provide further details on pricing or reasons for the change.

FSD is Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system, which the company says can handle some driving tasks but still requires driver supervision.

The change affects new customers and those looking to upgrade their vehicles after February 14.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tesla moves to subscriptions as Musk chases pay milestones, with questions on resale value

  • Musk’s 2025 CEO pay plan ties to 10 million active Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscriptions by late 2035 1. The shift also supports 20 million vehicles and an $8.5 trillion value goal 2.
  • Uptake sits at 12% as of October 2025 1. A $99 per month plan undercuts the $8,000 buy-up and could lift sign-ups during an expected soft first quarter 1.
  • Tesla has not explained resale impacts for cars with paid FSD 3. Past prices ran $5,000 to $15,000, and transfer limits angered owners 2. With purchases ending, lifetime FSD cars could fetch premiums, with no guidance on how the market will price them.

Used car dealers can profit from pre-2026 Teslas with paid FSD as supply shrinks

  • Cars bought with FSD before February 14, 2026 keep the one-time license on that vehicle, which caps supply 2. Many used Model 3s list near $24,651 on average 4. Dealers who flag and price FSD cars for ownership-minded buyers can carve out margin.
  • Tesla offered brief FSD transfer windows in Q3 2023 and in 2024 2. With subscriptions only, new buyers will not gain a transferable license, so pre-2026 FSD cars stand out in an EV resale market led by the Model 3 and Model Y 2.
  • Careful history checks through CARFAX (a vehicle history report service) matter 4. Confirming FSD status and any transfer rights shapes the premium a dealer can ask.
