Tesla stock jumps 18% as Trump pauses tariffs

On Apr. 9 President Donald Trump announced a pause on most reciprocal tariff hikes, affecting Tesla’s stock performance.

The announcement led to an 18% increase in Tesla shares, which reached nearly US$262 per share by mid-afternoon.

This tariff pause does not apply to China, which will face increased tariffs of 125% due to its retaliatory actions against American products

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has criticized the tariff policy, advocating for a “zero-tariff situation” between Europe and North America.

Musk did not comment on the recent decision.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tesla’s precarious balancing act between U.S. and Chinese markets

Tesla’s struggle with tariffs highlights the vulnerabilities of global supply chains in today’s geopolitical climate.

The company imports 20-25% of its car parts, including 40% of battery components from China, making it particularly susceptible to tariff impacts despite manufacturing vehicles in the U.S. 1.

This vulnerability becomes more significant considering China’s importance to Tesla’s business strategy, as the company’s sales in China exceeded $2 billion in 2017, doubling from $1 billion the previous year 2.

The tariff pause represents a temporary reprieve, but Tesla still faces the challenge of potential retaliatory action from China, where local competitors like BYD are already gaining market share.

Tesla’s position reflects the broader predicament facing multinational companies caught between competing economic powers, where supply chain integration conflicts with increasingly protectionist trade policies.

2️⃣ Musk’s political alliances create tangible business consequences

Tesla’s stock volatility demonstrates how executive political positioning can directly impact company valuations and brand perception.

The company lost approximately 10% of its future customer base globally due to brand damage from Musk’s political associations, according to analyst assessments 3.
