Tesla starts short-term rental service as EV tax credits expire
Tesla has launched a short-term car rental service at two stores in California as it responds to slowing sales in the US after the end of federal EV tax credits.
Rentals are available at Tesla’s San Diego and Costa Mesa locations, with plans to expand to more sites by the end of this year, according to Electrek.
Customers can rent vehicles for three to seven days, with rates starting at US$60 per day depending on the model.
The rental includes free access to Tesla Superchargers and supervised Full Self-Driving features.
Renters who later purchase a Tesla receive a US$250 credit.
This move allows customers to rent directly from Tesla rather than through third-party companies like Hertz, which already offers Teslas in its fleet.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla rental push meets demand worries; clean‑vehicle credits unavailable for vehicles acquired after Sept. 30, 2025
- The federal New Clean Vehicle Credit offers up to $7,500 for new EV purchases. It ends for vehicles acquired after Sept. 30, 2025; the Previously‑Owned and Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credits, a business‑focused federal incentive, end on the same date 1.
- Renters cannot claim these credits; only the buyer at service placement can. Individuals and their businesses can use the New Clean Vehicle Credit. Rental‑fleet purchases may instead use the Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit, which is unavailable for vehicles acquired after Sept. 30, 2025 2.
- The rental rollout arrived as some credits expired and gives shoppers longer test drives before they commit.
- Tesla offers a $250 purchase credit to renters to nudge a sale. That covers about 3.3% of the lost $7,500 federal incentive.
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) rental fleets need purpose‑built tools that tech vendors and fleet managers can supply
- Tesla’s direct rental operation needs systems for booking, payments, and fleet tools plus telematics (real‑time vehicle data with remote controls). White‑label (rebrandable) plus enterprise rental platforms offer these features, including OneDealer’s operator platform with telematics solutions 3.
- EV rental fleets need telematics to monitor vehicle status and run remote operations across many pickup sites. That setup differs from traditional dealership loaner management (short‑term service vehicles) 3.
- Investors plus B2B (business‑to‑business) software providers can find a new buyer in OEM rental channels as manufacturers seek direct customer relationships and more data.
