The Gurugram facility, is Tesla’s third in India and the first to offer consultations, bookings, and test drives, moving beyond display and brand familiarization.
Tesla launched two imported Model Y variants in India, priced at 59.9 crore rupees (US$ 33,600) and 67.9 crore rupees (US$ 38,100), both shipped from Shanghai and subject to a 70% import duty.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla’s India pricing puts it in a luxury niche, limiting near term volume
- At ₹59.9–67.9 lakh (~$70,000), Model Y sits above India’s average car price under ₹20 lakh, so buyers will skew to wealthy city owners 1.
- A 110% duty applies on cars over $40,000, while the new EV policy lowers it to 15% for firms investing ₹4,150 crore (₹41.5 billion) in local manufacturing 2. Tesla has not committed to build locally 3. On-road totals reach ₹61 lakh in Mumbai and ₹66.77 lakh in Gurugram after registration plus local levies 3.
- Order to delivery conversion looks soft with 600 orders between mid July and late August 3. Sales have barely cleared 100 since September, with only 40 in October 4.
EV charging investors can act on Tesla’s eight site rollout plan
- Four sites are live with 16 Superchargers (DC fast chargers) and 10 destination chargers (slower AC chargers for longer stops), with eight in total planned 567. The network will expand beyond Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram into busy hubs plus tourist spots 47.
- V4 units (fourth generation DC fast chargers) are priced at ₹24 per kW with 250 kW capacity, while destination units cost ₹14 per kW at 11 kW 5. The company is scouting popular highway routes 7, creating openings for malls or hotels to host chargers at tech parks or highway plots 47.
