Tesla Shanghai hits 2025 monthly record with 90,812 deliveries
Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory delivered 90,812 vehicles in September, marking its highest monthly output in 2025, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
The figure rose 9.2% from August and 2.8% year-on-year.
The Shanghai plant remains Tesla’s largest globally, serving both China and export markets such as Japan.
The new six-seat Model Y L, launched in September, features a longer range and higher price than the base model, targeting larger families.
In the first nine months of 2025, the factory delivered 606,364 vehicles, down 10.3% from the same period last year.
Tesla continues to face growing competition in China from local EV makers, which has pressured its market share.
The CPCA is expected to release more detailed September sales data later this month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
September 2025 record blends China sales with exports
- Tesla logged 90,812 September deliveries from Shanghai 1, a factory total that folds mainland sales with shipments to Japan and other markets 2. The uptick may come from scheduling for exports, not a clear local rebound.
- In August, Tesla registered 57,152 vehicles in China and shipped 26,040 abroad 3. Exports made up 31% of Shanghai output, which dilutes the headline wholesale (factory shipments) figure as a demand signal.
- The China Passenger Car Association has not released the September split between mainland retail and exports 4. Analysts cannot tell if the Model Y L, which targets affluent Chinese families 2, is lifting local purchases or padding wholesale totals through pre-export builds.
Six-seat Model Y L opens room for tech firms serving affluent multi-child families
- Model Y L starts at 339,000 yuan, 30% above the base model, with a 751 km range and a 3.04-meter wheelbase 2. It targets Chinese families with more than one child who want space and range 5. That opens work for software and mobility-tech firms on routing apps, in-car content localization, plus charging software.
- Local reports say Model Y L drew over 120,000 orders within two weeks of launch 5. The pace averaged nearly 10,000 a day 5. Demand for three-row premium EVs looks strong, which adtech platforms and insurance or fintech providers can monetize with targeted offers to this high-spending group.
