Tesla secures permit to launch robotaxi rides in Arizona

Tesla has secured a ride-hailing permit in Arizona, clearing the final regulatory requirement to launch a robotaxi service in the state.

Arizona’s Department of Transportation said Tesla applied for a transportation network company permit on November 13, 2025 and received approval on November 17, 2025.

This permit allows Tesla to operate a commercial ride-hailing service, including autonomous vehicles that can charge passengers for rides.

Arizona is a major hub for autonomous vehicle testing, with companies like Waymo already running robotaxi services in the Phoenix area since 2018.

Under state law, companies must complete a self-certification process for autonomous vehicle testing, but a separate permit is needed to operate paid ride-hailing services.
