Tesla’s ability to sell vehicles in California is at risk following a weeklong court hearing that concluded on July 25.

The hearing is part of a lawsuit filed by California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in 2022 regarding alleged misleading advertising of Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) and “Autopilot” technologies.

The DMV seeks to suspend Tesla’s sales in the state for a minimum of 30 days.

They are also requesting monetary damages for consumers. No final ruling has been made.

The lawsuit claims that Tesla misrepresented its driver assistance systems as capable of autonomous operation.

The DMV’s complaint references Tesla’s website, which in 2021 and 2022 advertised that its system could conduct trips without driver intervention.

DMV officials contend that these claims are inconsistent with the technology’s actual capabilities, which require drivers to remain attentive.

Tesla attorney Matthew Benedetto stated during the hearing that the company has consistently informed customers that the vehicles cannot fully drive themselves.

He emphasized that Tesla advises drivers not to rely entirely on its FSD or Autopilot systems.
