Tesla recalls Model Y SUVs after labeling issue
Tesla is recalling 14,575 Model Y SUVs in the US because some vehicles are missing a certification label that lists weight specifications, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on May 22.
The regulator said Tesla will inspect the affected vehicles and install the missing label.
NHTSA said the missing label could lead owners to overload the SUVs and raise the risk of a crash.
It added that it had no reports of collisions, deaths, or injuries linked to the issue.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A missing label recall is small next to the Model Y’s larger recall record
- This missing certification label recall is small beside the Model Y’s wider history, with one study estimating the vehicle could face more than 62 safety recalls over 30 years, far above the industry average of 4.0 1.
- The same study places four Tesla vehicles among the five models with the most projected lifetime recalls 1.
- Past campaigns covered more serious problems, including suspension or steering fasteners that may not have been tightened correctly and could reduce steering control 2.
- Tesla has also issued recalls for power steering assist and rearview cameras, along with Autopilot, the company’s driver-assistance system 3. One Autopilot campaign covered more than 2 million vehicles 3.
Tesla’s software-first approach is changing how recalls work
- Many Tesla recalls are fixed with over-the-air software updates, so a dealer visit is not needed 3. One update corrected an incorrect warning-light font size in about 2.19 million vehicles 3.
- Some Tesla models keep getting recalls as they age, unlike many vehicles whose recall rates drop after the first few years, according to automotive research firm iSeeCars 1.
- That shift pushes the auto industry to treat cars more like software, which may dull consumer response to safety notices and make oversight harder for regulators 1.
