Tesla recalls 13,000 cars in US over battery defect

Tesla will recall nearly 13,000 vehicles in the US due to a battery pack defect that could cause a sudden loss of drive power, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects certain 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y vehicles.

The defect could prevent drivers from accelerating, raising the risk of a crash.

Tesla will replace the faulty battery pack contactor at no cost to owners.

The company has reported 36 warranty claims and 26 field reports about the issue but said it is not aware of any related crashes or injuries.

Earlier in October, US authorities opened a probe into 2.9 million Tesla vehicles with the Full Self-Driving system after reports of safety violations and crashes.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tesla recall ties issue to a low-rate supplier defect

  • NHTSA’s recall filing estimates 1% of 12,963 vehicles carry the defect, about 130 units 1. That rate fits a contained manufacturing issue, not a battery pack design problem 1.
  • The defect traces to poor coil termination in solenoids, electromagnetic coils that actuate a switch 12. They came from Sistemas Mecatrónicos InTiCa S.A.P.I. (InTiCa), a Mexico-based tier-2 supplier 12. These parts sit inside battery pack contactors, high-voltage relays that connect or disconnect battery power, and a weak joint can make one open during driving 12.
  • Tesla’s field reliability team first saw warranty claims in August 2025 13. By October it had 36 claims with 26 field reports 13. There were no collisions, injuries, or fatalities, which fits early detection and containment 13.
  • Many Tesla recalls get fixed with over-the-air software updates 23. This time service centers must replace contactors with certified versions that avoid InTiCa solenoids, which means a supplier change, not a broad redesign 23.

EV contactor makers face tougher quality demands

  • The filing names InTiCa and SongChuan, a Taiwan-based tier-1 contactor supplier that provides complete subsystems to automakers 2. The mix leaves room for rivals to pitch better coil termination to Tesla and other EV makers 2.
  • For manufacturing and quality leaders at EV suppliers, this raises the need to qualify multiple contactor sources 2. Automakers should enforce strict incoming checks for high-voltage parts where sudden failure can cut power 2.
  • Investors can target contactor makers with proven reliability in high-voltage uses, since automakers may shift toward fewer, higher quality suppliers after incidents like this expose weak links.
  • Tesla integrates three systems into single battery pack modules 4. The charger is onboard AC to DC 4. The DC-DC converter steps high-voltage battery power down to 12 to 48 volts for vehicle electronics 4. The Battery Management System (BMS) monitors and protects the battery 4. That setup raises the stakes for contactor reliability 4.
