Tesla plans gradual ramp-up of Cybercab, Optimus production

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the initial production of the company’s Cybercab robotaxi and Optimus humanoid robot will be very slow before increasing over time.

Musk explained that both projects involve new technology, which will result in early outputs that are “agonizingly slow,” but expect to accelerate significantly later.

The Cybercab is designed as a two-seater without manual controls like a steering wheel or pedals, with Tesla aiming for volume production in 2026.

The company has also indicated that Optimus production could begin towards the end of this year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The 2026 Cybercab volume-production target could depend on approvals not yet covered

  • Tesla’s Cybercab is described as a two-seater built without manual controls, including a steering wheel or pedals. 1
  • Special exemptions from federal motor vehicle safety standards could be needed, along with state permits for fully driverless use, before the vehicle can legally operate on public roads.
  • To judge whether 2026 volume production is realistic, the status of any federal exemption filings and state permit applications would need to be confirmed, plus the usual approval timelines.

A Cybercab rollout could open work for urban infrastructure vendors, though the scale remains unclear

  • Tesla said it was on track to start volume production of Cybercab in 2026. 1
  • City transportation agencies may need tools to manage autonomous vehicle curb activity, such as assigned pickup and drop-off zones.
  • Companies that sell mobility software or curbside management systems to city governments could benefit from watching municipal requests for proposals and grant-funded pilot programs across 2025 and 2026 if robotaxi fleets expand.
