Tesla leads South Korea import car market in Q1

Tesla led South Korea’s imported car market in Q1 for the first time, after selling 20,964 vehicles from January to March and rising 335.1% year-on-year, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.

BMW followed with 19,368 units, and Mercedes-Benz sold 15,862 as Tesla moved ahead in a market long dominated by German brands.

EV demand rose after the government confirmed subsidies in January, and EVs made up 47.8% of imported car sales in March vs. 42.9% for hybrids.

Tesla’s Korea surge came as its global deliveries fell 14% from Q4 to 358,000 in Q1, and local sales have also been linked to aggressive pricing, including conditional discounts possibly aimed at clearing inventory of China-made Model Y vehicles.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tesla’s success tracks Korea’s subsidy rules

  • Tesla’s sales in South Korea closely follow a government rule that grants the full national subsidy only to electric vehicles priced under 53 million won 1.
  • To fit that cap, Tesla set the 2026 Model 3 RWD (rear-wheel drive) at 49.9 million won, which kept it eligible for 100% of the national subsidy 1.
  • With added local government support, the Model 3’s out-of-pocket price can drop to 37 million won to 39 million won 1.
  • The shift helped set off a broader price fight, including Volvo cutting the EX30 by more than 7 million won, while the purchase price in Seoul reaches 36 million won 1.

Korea’s EV price war pushes automakers to adjust

  • Tesla’s low sticker price has turned the market into a “chicken game,” pulling EVs beyond early adopters into a price-conscious mainstream 1.
  • Hyundai and Kia now compete on financing too, with promotions that bring installment interest rates down to the 2.8% range 1.
  • National purchase subsidies for 2026 differ by model and run higher for some domestic cars, including Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 at 5.7 million won, while most Tesla models sit at 1.68 million to 2.1 million won, with the Tesla Model 3 Premium Long Range RWD measured at 4.2 million won 2.
  • Policy now balances faster EV adoption with support for a domestic auto sector that shipped $70.8 billion in exports in 2024, which topped 10% of the nation’s $683.8 billion in total exports 3.
