Tesla launches higher-priced Model Y in US

Tesla has introduced a new all-wheel-drive variant of its Model Y in the US, priced at US$41,990, according to the company’s website.

The updated Model Y is priced higher than the standard version.

In October, Tesla launched lower-priced versions of the Model Y and Model 3 to maintain sales after the end of federal EV tax credits.

Industry demand for EVs has declined since September, following the termination of US$7,500 federal tax incentives.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently said plans to cease production of the Model S and Model X sedans, reallocating factory space in California for humanoid robot manufacturing.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tesla’s new Model Y is part of a much larger product overhaul

  • The new all-wheel-drive Model Y variant comes from a wider update called “Juniper,” with light bars on the exterior and new interior touches across many trims 1.
  • Tesla is also building clearer trim tiers, so shoppers can see sharper differences between versions.
  • To bring the starting price down, Tesla added a base “Standard” model that drops the rear infotainment screen, ventilated seats, and ambient lighting 1.
  • On the base trim, the glass roof sits under a headliner to cut costs, a change that does not appear on Premium versions 2, 1.

The Model Y refresh signals a strategic shift for Tesla and a new threat for legacy auto

  • This update boosts the competitiveness of a vehicle that was the world’s best-selling model in 2023 1.
  • Tesla relies on manufacturing that uses giant presses to cast large frame sections as a single piece, which helps make these changes practical 1.
  • With separate Standard and Premium trims, Tesla borrows a familiar auto playbook to reach more buyers as US EV demand has cooled since September after the end of a US$7,500 federal tax incentive.
  • The approach raises pressure on rivals such as Hyundai and Ford, since a refreshed best-seller now targets both budget shoppers and premium buyers 2.
