Tesla launches China AI hub to boost self-driving software

Tesla has launched a China-focused AI training center to improve its self-driving software amid increased competition in the country’s EV market, according to company vice-president Grace Tao.

The move aims to advance Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, which relies on neural network technology trained with real-world video data.

China’s regulatory environment has recently seen progress, with authorities authorizing Changan and BAIC to develop level 3 autonomous vehicles, and several domestic automakers, including BYD and Xiaomi, conducting road tests.

Tesla’s deliveries in China declined 4.8% in 2025 to 625,698 units, representing about 4.8% of the country’s EV sales, where local rivals are rapidly advancing autonomous driving capabilities.
