Tesla to launch 6-seat Model Y in China as competition heats up
Tesla will launch a six-seat version of its Model Y SUV, called Model Y L, in China in the fourth quarter of this year. The announcement was made on Tesla’s Chinese social media platforms on July 16.
Details from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicate that the Model Y L will be nearly 5 meters long, with a wheelbase of 3.04 meters. This makes it slightly longer than the standard Model Y.
Analysts suggest that the introduction of the Model Y L is part of Tesla’s strategy to attract Chinese middle-class families who prefer larger vehicles.
Tesla has not disclosed the pricing for this new variant, while the base Model Y starts at 263,500 yuan (US$36,715) in the market.
China is a vital market for Tesla, with its Shanghai Gigafactory producing over 40% of the company’s global vehicle output. The Model Y is Tesla’s best-selling model worldwide, with over 480,000 units delivered in mainland China last year. This made it the top-selling SUV, including petrol-powered models, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
In the second quarter of 2025, Tesla’s global sales fell by 13.5% year-on-year to 384,122 vehicles. Meanwhile, its China deliveries dropped by 11.7% year-on-year to 128,803 units. In contrast, Chinese rival BYD sold 606,993 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) during the same period.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s SUV preference shapes EV market strategies
Tesla’s six-seat Model Y reflects a deep understanding of Chinese consumer preferences in the world’s largest EV market.
SUVs have become the fastest-growing passenger car segment in China, with over half of urban Chinese car buyers planning to purchase an SUV according to market research 1.
This preference is driven by practical considerations, as Chinese consumers specifically value interior space and safety features when making vehicle purchasing decisions 1.
The timing of Tesla’s move aligns with market data showing that despite overall sales challenges, the Model Y delivered 61,000 units in June 2025, maintaining its position as China’s bestselling SUV 2.
Tesla’s strategy recognizes that vehicle size and capacity are crucial differentiators in China, where consumers increasingly use cars for family activities like camping rather than just commuting.
2️⃣ Market polarization creates strategic openings for global players
The Chinese EV market has evolved into a distinctive “dumbbell-shaped” structure with high demand at both ends of the price spectrum, budget EVs between ¥50,000-100,000 ($7,000-14,000) and premium models above ¥200,000 ($28,000) 3.
