Tesla invests $2b in Musk’s xAI for autonomous driving, robotics

Tesla announced a US$2 billion investment in Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, on January 28, 2026, aiming to support its autonomous driving and robotics initiatives.

The company also reaffirmed that production of its Cybercab robotaxi and Semi trucks is on schedule for this year. Tesla’s shares increased by about 3.4% after hours following the announcement.

The automaker has faced repeated delays in its robotaxi rollout and has not provided updated timelines for the Cybercab’s deployment.

Despite challenges, Tesla reported quarterly revenue of US$24.9 billion, surpassing estimates, with a 17.9% gross margin excluding regulatory credits.

The company continues to focus on expanding its vehicle fleet with lower-priced models to boost deliveries, while its energy storage business saw a 29% rise in deployments to a record 14.2 gigawatt-hours.

🧠 Food for thought

The robotaxi race is won city by city, not just with technology

  • Autonomous-vehicle companies, fleet operators, and investors need plans that work at the city level.
  • Tesla has missed robotaxi rollout timelines more than once, which puts regulation at the center of the schedule.
  • That gap opens room for outside infrastructure and software vendors such as charging depot operators or safety validation tools.
  • A practical route targets places with clear rules. California uses a multi-stage process for paid robotaxi service through the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) and DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) 34.
